P L A C E: Reckonings by Asian American Artists
March 23 – August 11, 2024
Co-Curated by Judy Koong Dennis and Zoë Latzer
The ICA San José and Montalvo Arts Center present P L A C E: Reckonings by Asian American Artists, featuring artists from the Lucas Artists Program at Montalvo. The exhibition explores histories of exclusion, migration, and diasporic identity, while examining racial discrimination, labor exploitation, and community belonging.
Through installation, painting, photography, video, and social practice, the artists invite reflection and dialogue about identity, heritage, and justice. A participatory component allows visitors to engage directly with questions of belonging and representation.
Featured artists include Adrienne Pao, Robin Lasser, Phung Huynh, Ranu Mukherjee, Wanxin Zhang, Mail Order Brides/M.O.B., Namita Paul, Related Tactics, Bruce Yonemoto, Stephanie Syjuco, Valerie Soe, Christy Chan, and Christine Wong Yap.
The exhibition title draws inspiration from Cathy Park Hong’s Minor Feelings: An Asian American Reckoning.
