Mildred Howard: The Time and Space of Now
September 16, 2022 – February 26, 2023

Presented at the ICA San José, The Time and Space of Now showcases the work of Bay Area artist Mildred Howard, including the first Bay Area presentation of her film The Time and Space of Now (2021). The exhibition features three multi-media installation pieces exploring the relationships between time, space, and the movement of people, alongside thirty works on paper, generously loaned by the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation.

Howard created the film after discovering 8 mm. footage among her mother’s belongings, shot when she was 14, and interwoven with material filmed on the beach in Alameda. The work incorporates a fictional, unscripted metaphysical dialogue between artists Dewey Crumpler and Oliver Lee Jackson, examining storytelling, migration, and the interconnectedness of time and space.

Interpretive text by Luke Williams. Curated by Zoë Latzer.
