Masako Miki: Night Parade of One Hundred Demons
November 18, 2022 – September 2024
Presented by the ICA San José, Night Parade of One Hundred Demons is part of Masako Miki’s ongoing Shapeshifters series, inspired by Shinto animist traditions. The project brings to life yōkai, shapeshifting creatures from Japanese folklore, that embody dualities, humor, and the fantastical, offering a rich exploration of folklore and storytelling.
Since 2015, Miki has developed the Night Parade of One Hundred Demons (Hyakki Yagyō), a traditional narrative depicting either orderly processions or chaotic riots of yōkai. This commission incorporates Augmented Reality (AR), animating her 2D and 3D characters to enhance storytelling and bring the parade to life. Curated by Zoë Latzer, Curator and Director of Public Programs.
